Thumbnails

these are some pictures of our thumbnails. We spent some time making these and finally produced an outline for our story. I drew the pictures whilst ben wrote down a key to remind us of what the pictures were about. While filming our thumbnails are a great asset, so we dont forget what order to film in and to keep us all on task.

Soloist Featuret

The film was based on a book which features a true story of Nathanile.

For effect, jamie had to be very passionate and had to make the role his own by even learning to play the chello.

The extras in the film were all real and unpaid. This gave a sense of realism to the film.

All the scenes are shot in real places, no sets, minimum lighting added.

A good relationship is needed amongst the cast to get the best acting possible.

Film Draft

Film Ident

We have created a logo for our Film company, we have called it bio Films as we feel that the compnay we generate would be interested in many film genres rather then just the one. We have gone for a yellow Hazard symbol to keep the ident loud and clear to notice from distance.

Peer Assessment

In our boxes we got mostly 1s or left unmarked, due to fact we were not fully ready and had not finished ordering the shots and editing them to run smoothly. We new we were not going to get high grades, but we took away some good points, tips and techniques used by other students. And we were pleased that in some boxes we got 3s, this was because people liked some of the ideas that we had spoke about. We also scored 3s in boxes for folding steady shots, framing well and filming appropriate material. And we were very pleased to score a 3 in mise-en-scene because this shows that the audience can find infomation out without being force fead the answers, this helps the setting to be more inconspicuous and mysterious.

WE have learnt from the lesson some valuable tips and techniques to help us improve our film opening. One main idea that we have now is that the credits should go in the begining and whilst the movie is rolling. So we are going to encorporate the names into the film to give it the feeling of an opening not a short film itself.

Self Assessment

In todays lesson our group has realised that we need to do more filming and editing. I think that we have some good shots but need to make sure we edit them to their fullest to give maximum effect. We have filmed all the out side shots which were fairly easy but the3 hardest shots are still to be filmed. The inside shots will cause the most difficulty in the opening due to the hard selection of lighting, camera angles and acting. These will all need to be spot on to create the fear, suspense and tension needed to make our film really work. If these are not as good as we imagine then the film will be chessy and look un professional.

The Soloist Actors

Jamie Foxx - Nathaniel Ayers
Robert Downey Jr. - Steve Lopez

A basic outline of the plot is that Steve lopez finds nathaniel ayers a homeless demented muscian, and writes articles about him. As their friendship progresses Steve faces problems to overcome to help his new friend.

Ideas for editing

we are filming an opening so we need to ask alot of questions for the audience to find out the answers in the rest of the film. this would come under the enigma code and we are looking to include this in our opening.

some of the editing technbiques that i would like to take into account are; continuity editing, so that we can create a sense of reality and show time moving foward.
jump cut, to disorientate the audience whilst our victim is fleeing the killer.
credits, to show information about who stars in the film etc.
cross cutting, to show what the victim is doing as the killer is coming up the stairs.
eye line match, when the victim is looking at something, then we see it through her point of view.
flashbacks, to show past actions and to create a wider understanding of the film as a whole.
linear narrative, the opening is going to be in a story telling stle in chronological order.
and finally parallel editing, which is where events are happening in 2 locations and come into one scene with a small connection.

Actors

we have chose ben to be the stalker because he is big and burley. he will also easily over power lauren and tower over her. This will make it easier to believe that lauren has no chance of getting out alive! Bens facial hair will also help give the stalker maturity and age.

Lauren has been chosen to play our victim. she is good for the job because she is small and inocent. she will be easily overpowered by ben. she also is a bit older so gives more maturity to the film.

we should take into account when filming, that when ben is following lauren, use a low angle shot to give ben superior presence over lauren.

Killer moodboard

This is a few famous killers/stalkers in films. I think i would like our killer in our film to be like mike myers. He has a big presence and overpowers everyone, also he is mysterious because he doesn't talk and you rarely see his face.

Story bording and thumb nails

As a group we finally got our ideas out, and got them wrote down on paper. We had a vague idea but it had no structure.

To main idea of the movie opening is that there has been a man stqalking a women on mumerous occasions and we has finally descided to finish the job off once and for all, ( trying not reveal everything :)!)so he breaks into her house, as the victim desperately struggles to hide in her house, the victim is hunting her down.

We came up with good ideas and the location will be perfect. We have a friend who lives in an old hotel. And has a perfect open staircase for our filming. At one point in the opening, we are trying to achieve a shot which is a CCTV shot. WE want it to have a 2 second delay so that its shows live still images of what is happening. This will hopefully add great affect as the killer slowly closes in on the victim.

To help us plan the camera shots out, we drew a plan of the house and then sketched on multiple angles on hw we wanted the opening to pan out. THis really helped us visualise the opening scene.

When it comes to filming we have several ideas for the final scene. So we are going to film them all and use the best one.

Insperations

Me and Ben recently went to the cinema and saw this trailer. We both liked it created suspense at the start with weird events occurring, but then created a contrasting effect using mad world by Garry Joules. This slowed the high intensity level action down, with a slow depressing song. I think it works well and gives good affect.

An essential part of our opening/trailer must be that the enigma code is present and that there are a lot of questions to be answered, to make people watch the film.
